Many of the people that I speak with have clearly defined goals.
Others are less structured and are more playful in our conversations.
I sometimes think of the "junk drawer" I had growing up.
It was next to the 80's beige refrigerator over the bread drawer.
It was a mystery and filled with an assortment of stuff.
Bits of string, scissors, tools of various sorts (broken), coins, Tic Tacks and roles of coloured tape.
When I looked in the drawer, I didn't see a mess but a collection of things to be combined into something else.
"Tic-tac flavoured string anyone" (don't try this)
Coaching reminds me of this process: growing curious about what's in our drawers. Each item is an experience or story that is neither good nor bad—it is an element we can examine and combine to see what we can make of it.
Connecting the dots of the random stuff and exploring what they could mean is one way to get to know yourself.
We all have a junk drawer full of stuff we carry around.
What is hiding in yours?
